Dionysus or Bacchus, god of viticulture, wine, feast and merriment, son of Zeus and Semele. Dionysus was loved and revered by people because he introduced them to the wonderful intoxicating taste of wine. It is said that Dionysus first revealed wine to the king of Aetolia, Ineas, when his shepherd Staphylus came across the delicious fruit and brought some back to his king to thank him. Ineas squeezed the juicy fruits and tasted their juice. From then on, the god called the juice "wine" and the fruit "grapes" after his faithful shepherd. Dionysus constantly wandered with a thyrsus in one hand and a wine vessel in the other, teaching the art of viticulture and initiating the joy of participating in the endless festival. The Dionysus cult was the most popular in ancient Greece.

MOUNTAIN JUKTAS
Juktas is the name of the sacred Minoan mountain whose shape is reminiscent of Zeus. It is just 2 km west of Archanes, in a unique landscape, surrounded by vineyards and olive groves, full of myths and mysteries. According to legend, the tomb of Zeus was located there. In fact, the name Juktas is a variation of the Latin Jupiter, meaning "Zeus." It was a sacred mountain for the Minoans with at least two places of worship, one on the highest point of the mountain (Psili Koryfi) and the second in Anemospilia.

FOURNI
Archanes is close to many hidden treasures. Be sure to visit Fourni in Kato Archanes, a lush green hill known for the Preminoan Cemetery (2400 BC-2200 BC), the largest prehistoric cemetery in the Aegean and an important archaeological site in Crete. The area is ideal for relaxing walks in the forest and excursions into nature and can be reached both by car and via the wonderful hiking trails that have been created. There is also a small but lovely stone theater where you can enjoy the fantastic views of Archanes and Dia island.

Aqueduct in Spilia
The largest water bridge built in Crete to solve the water shortage problem of Megalo Kastro (now Heraklion) is located in the green countryside of Agia Irini in Spilia, just 1 km from Knossos Palace. Built during the Egyptian occupation (1830-1840), the aqueduct transported water from the Fountana spring in Kounavos and from the Miliara spring in Skalani through the famous Morosini fountain to the center of Heraklion. The reason for this construction was the discovery by the Egyptians of the ancient Roman aqueduct of Knossos with a 1,150 meter long underground tunnel that was cleaned, opened and restored. The arcade is still preserved today; However, its western exit is closed while the eastern one on the Skalani side is still in very good condition.
