The small boutique hotel Madonna del Mare of 3 suites was the former convent of Santa Maria dei Miracoli (Convent of the Virgin Mary of Miracles) built in 1615 by Marussa Mengano for the Dominican nuns of Chania on the hill of Kastelli. Santa Maria dei Miracoli, as the Latin name of the monastery of Panagia ton Thavmaton is, was a whole complex consisting of a church and cells surrounded by a fortress. The south wall and part of the east wall of the Catholic church as well as some of the cells in the south part of the original building complex are still preserved today. The courtyard of the monastery is located in the southern and eastern part of the building complex and was fenced by the Byzantine wall. This small boutique hotel is located in the heart of the old Venetian port! The old walls and the ruins of the monastery bring back the old spirit of the building. When the Venetian occupation in Chania was at its peak, the monastery attracted crowds of believers. The Monastery of Panagia ton Thavmaton was badly damaged by the 1941 bombing of Chania during World War II. Today only the south and part of the east walls of the church (the catholicon), part of the cells and the outer wall of the monastery, and part of the old covered corridor leading from the church to the cells have been preserved. Following the guidance and observation of the archeology service, one building has been completely renovated to preserve the original 16th-century condition of the building.
