Chania - West Crete

  • Crete West Crete
  • Crete West Crete
  • Crete West Crete
Chania for many, the most beautiful town in Crete The town is simply unique and alive. Chania is the second largest City of Crete. Large parts of the old town are closed to traffic; the bulk of the Venetian mansions restored or converted into hotels. One of the most important constructions of the Venetian Period is the Entrance of Renier Mansion. In former times Chania was divided in 3 parts the East part for the Muslims the Southwest part for the Jewish and the West part for the Christians. In the East oft he old town there are traces of the Turks: a small minaret or masonry. On the Northeast of the Venetian walls there is the only preserved gate “The rampart Sabbionara” still preserves its Turkish name "koum - kapi (Kum Kapisi = the Gate of the Sand it is constructed in the sea. On the front of the rampart, the circular Venetian emblem of the lion of Agios Marcos is still preserved. The Byzantine Wall was built in 12th century and its outline is irregular with longitudinal axle from the East to the West, where its two central gates were located.

The fortress Revellino del Porto on the northwest part of the port was constructed by Venetians. Its construction began in 1610 and completed a few years before the fall of the city in Turks in 1645. The construction of the Grand Arsenal started in 1585 by the Intendant Alvise Grimani. A new era began for the Grand Arsenal with the addition of the second flour in 1872 during the Turkish period. Nowadays the building hosted several important public services and authorities. The Grand Arsenal has been transformed from a roofless ruin into an impressive building that hosts various events and exhibitions. It hosts “Center of Mediterranean Architecture” organizing important cultural events and exhibitions related to architectureWorth highlighting are the good restaurants and tavernas. Some of them are in old stonework with open gables. In the alleys there are still traditional handcrafts such as bakers, grinders and carpenters. Diving schools have their offices at the harbour. Varrious excursions in boats are on offer. A walk through Chania should include the Art Nouveau market halls, the Venetian shipyards (today turned into galleries and museums) and the harbour fortress. The Marine Museum with its model ships is worth a visit as is the Archaelogical Museum.

For those who like shopping, it is worth looking at Venetian gold jewellery, some leather wares and of course, Cretan olive oil. If you travel by bus you are in the old town in a few minutes. If coming by car, use the pay car park near the Market Halls on Nikiforou Foka Street. The port of Chania cannot be used by modern ships because of the shallow water, which contributed in preserving its old character. In the old town of Chania you will only see the Marina for Yachting and small ships. The harbour of Chania which is used by ferries and Cruisers is located in the Souda Bay East of the Town in the edge of Akrotiri peninsula. Everyone who saunters through the narrow, winding alleys, who follows the goings-on in the market and who has sat during the day or evening in the port tavernas will not easily forget the ambience felt here.

At the end of the bay, the boat will sail between the islet of Agria Gramvousa and Cape Vouxa (Trypiti). The landscape is breathtaking, against the backdrop of Valenti, Pontikonisi, Balos lagoon, and Imeri Gramvousa. The boat will approach afterwards Gramvousa island or Balos lagoon (depending on the itinerary) in about 20 minutes.
Visit Gramvousa-the island of pirates
The boat shall arrive at the small port of Gramvousa, where you shall stay for about 2 hours. The location of Gramvousa, the Cretan nature, the legends and the turbulent history of the area exude a magical aura.
The highest point of the island, atop a steep rock, at an altitude of 137 meters, is dominated by the famous castle of Gramvousa, which was built by the Venetians in 1579. The castle played a significant role in the history of the wider area. The panoramic view, the magnificent nature, and the legend of the pirates’ hidden treasure, allure you to visit it, after a 20 minute hike (it’s essential to wear comfortable shoes).
The ship sails on to visit the lagoon of Balos

Balos is listed as one of the best beaches in the world. This exotic beach-lagoon and rare natural monument is situated between the Gramvousa peninsula and Cape Tigani. Nothing can describe what you are about to feel when you see this. When you get to swim in the lukewarm, shallow, turquoise blue waters, relax in the pink sandy beach, which is filled with shells, and admire the natural beauty, the rocks and the cliffs rising above you!

The sandy beach of Balos is adorned by a special kind of vegetation. Shrubby varieties, such as heather, Yenisey, thyme, and lentisc, have impressive shapes and patterns, proving their effort to survive in the adverse environmental conditions of the area, such as the strong northerly winds and the natural instability of the dunes. During the migration periods, there are many bird species here, while the lagoon’s mollusks are not to be found anywhere else in Crete in this composition and quantity. You will have the chance to stay in this paradise for about 3 hours.

Due to the incredible natural beauty and preserved ecosystem, both Gramvousa and Balos are included in the European initiative NATURA 2000. The preservation of the island’s natural environment, beyond the moral dimensions, is imposed through a strict national and European institutional protection system.

The Royal Villa may have been the residence of an aristocrat or a high priest. The third is the House of the Frescoes. It is located to the NW of the palace and is a small urban mansion with rich decoration on the walls. Dates from the 15th, 14th-12th centuries B.C. The fourth is the Unexplored Mansion. It is rectangular, with a central, four-pillared hall, corridors, storerooms and the remains of a staircase. Dates from the 12th to 14th centuries B.C.
