Top tip: Monemvasia ( ancient Malvasy) is a small town in the Southeast Peloponnese with about 5000 inhabitants, a world cultural heritage monument and a major attraction for every traveller in the Peloponnese. The city consists of the new town of Monemvasia and the old Monemvasia wich is built on a peninsula. Many travel guides state that the new Monemvassia is not as attractive as the old one. I can not confirm. The new town has its own charm. I saw both places as one, especially since they are connected by a dry moat.

In the Middle Ages, the Franks called it Malvoisie, to the English it was known as Malmsey. Its Greek name is derived from the two words meaning single entrance, that is, the only entrance to the fortress town. Monuments and churches are scattered throughout the old town. An important archaeological collection is housed in the old mosque in the Square of Elkomenos Christos.
The new Monemvasia has a very nice sandy beach, connected to a harbor promenade with bars and cafes. The old Monemvasia, the castle hill( on the offshore island), is only connected to the new town by a dam. The Old Monemvasia is car-free! Outside of the Old Monemvasia is a huge parking space for visitors. Stone streets, stone houses and a large gates characterize the cityscape of the old Monemvasia. Modern cafes, behind old stone walls and taverns with various specialties. Monemvasia means one access. The inhabitants of the old Monemvasias were wealthy, since Monemvasia was the largest trading center for goods for the inaccessible area of the Peloponnese. From here the goods were distributed to the rest of the Peloponnese.
