Red Beach - South Crete

  • South Crete
Matala Southeast Crete, on the trail of the hippies: Unorganized, reddish shimmering sandy beach, nature reserve for the Sea Turtles Caretta Caretta. It is also part of the Natura 2000 program. Red Beach was named after its shimmering red beach color, which is unique in Crete. Accessible via a very stony but well-marked short hiking trail of around 4 km. The deserted red beach promises beautiful sunsets and a turquoise blue sea. Steep limestone rocks surround the long bay. There are no shady spots, just a small kiosk with a few parasols. If you don't like hiking, we recommend the boat trip from Matala to the Red Beach.

You need sturdy shoes for hiking, as the rocky ground with sharp stones can be very uncomfortable with thin soles . I have to mention this although I remember very well how a barefoot tourist who was coming from the opposite direction had offered me his help to climb down a narrow passage. Hiking barefoot is not suitable for imitation! I was amazed by his bare feet and he was amazed by my slightly pained facial expression.
The beach is not organized, but it is one of the few nesting sites in Crete for the sea turtles Caretta Caretta. We made this hiking trip in early November. Despite the off-season we saw some hikers, families, who were on their way to hike to Red Beach. The trail from the small coastal town of Matala is well marked. We were not only fascinated by the beach itself, but the views of the crystal clear turquoise blue sea and the rock formations that surround this bay. A sculptor has immortalized himself there with his sculptures. On the rocky way on our hiking trail we saw fossilized shells. In particular respect for the environment, we ask you to bring a garbage bag and your empty water bottles back to your hotel.

It's going to be a once in a lifetime experience when you drive the South coast from end to end. From the wind-whipped mountain regions to the safe small secluded beaches. The wild South coast route of Crete is a sensational journey of soaring cliffs, picturesque coastal villages and hidden beaches. We recommend this self drive tour "Southern Crete". This optimal route consist of 3 Hotel-Locations within two weeks, it's excellent value for money. Click here: The South coast has been waiting for you.
