Kastelli-Kissamoss is the most westerly town of Crete. Enthroned on a hill over the city, like a grand hotel that has seen better days is the fortress Polirinia ( 5 km in the inland). The Dorians erected this town and Kastelli-Kissamos was the seaport. A visit to this village is worth it not only because of the archeological excavations. Those who have finally reached the top of the mountain of Polirinia after a long climb are rewarded by a view of the world that they have never seen before.
The beach is mostly shingle and deserted. Around Kastelli there are also some sandy bays. The inland is notable for green scenery olive trees as far as the eye can see. The Rodoupou Peninsular to the North and the wild Gramvoussa to the South give the bay a formidable setting. Both peninsulars are barely inhabited.
There are fantastic bathing coves with crystal clear water on the Gramvousa Peninsula. Turquoise blue lagoons promise unforgettable bathing fun. This Peninsular was very popular with pirates so it is called Pirates Bay for the tourists.
However the Greeks call it Frying Pan because there is no shade and it is very hot in summer. The Venetians constructed a fort at the tip of the peninsula.From May to October we are offering day-cruises from the harbour (about 2 km west from Kastelli-Kissamos) to the difficult-to-reach lagoons and the Venetian Fort. This tour is a hit for children but they should be over five years old. The Balos-Lagoon-Cruise is one of the highlighst of western Crete.
Although in the high season the ships are relatively full it is nevertheless worthwhile to see this natural beauty.
