Kalavrita is about 20 km in the inland from the coastal town of Diakopto (Northern Peloponnese, Achaia region). Kalavrita is now a holiday resort where the Greeks spend their winter holidays. There is a well-known ski area above the small town, in the "Helmos Mountains". The place is also reknown for hiking and winter tourism. A densely wooded region with streams that turn into waterfalls.

You can get to Kalavrita either by car via Diakopto (or Diakofto) or you can park at Diakopto station and take the narrow-gauge, cogwheel train. We chose the cog railway to enjoy the untouched nature of the "Helmos Mountains" when driving slowly. Off the streets. A must for every rail enthusiast. The rail is new, a construction from the Switzerland. But the track, the track is over 100 hundred years old. Completely renovated in 2008/2009, the trail leads through narrow gorges, steep slopes, over iron bridges, through the narrowest tunnels. A stunner!

Kalavrita has a very moving past. In retaliation, 676 Greeks were killed by German soldiers on December 13, 1943. Memorial day 13 December is today an international meeting point for young Europeans to remind them how terrible wars are. The Kalavrita Museum has brought together numerous exhibits on the history of unprecedented terror against the civilian population, including many original documents from the German Wehrmacht. It took over 50 years that a German President (Johannes Rau), visit Kalavrita, and there has been no compensation for the victims to date. Nevertheless, everyone is welcome in Kalavrita, including German tourists. There are very nice small hotels and guest houses. There are very good restaurants and shops selling traditional products on the small village roads. We think Kalavrita is definitely worth a visit. Nature, rail experience and history.
Nowadays Kalavrita is a memorial place for freedom!
