The small village of Koutsounari is about 10 km east of Ierapetra. Most of the holiday homes blend in with the landscape. The beach is made up of small pebbles but they are very easy to walk on. There are some tavernas, shops for those who are self-catering. The inland is ideal for longer hikes. A hire car should be part of the holiday budget. The seaside village Koutsounari is located in the southeast of the island and belong to the Lassithi Prefecture. Koutsounari is about 10 km from the south coast town of Ierapetra and 43 km from the north coast town of Agios Nikolaos. The small south coast village of Koutsounari, which was only created in the 1970s, lies on a slope of the Sitia Mountains. The place is an offshoot of the mountain village "Agios Ioanis". There are few small private accommodations, no nighlife! There are 2 taverns on the beach. It is the southernmost region in Europe. In midsummer it can get very hot in Koutsounari.
Beach highlights : The deserted, gently sloping pebble beach of Koutsounari, "Long Beach". The pebbles are very fine, very pleasant for the feet. The still untouched sandy beach of Xerokampos is also worth a visit.
Hiking excursions around the Koutsounari region: the small gorge "Red Butterlfy Gorge", the Butterfly Gorge. Sturdy hiking shoes are required for this gorge.
Other hikes: The "Sarakina Gorge", the "Mirtos Gorge" and the "Dasaki Gorge". The Sarakina and Mirtos gorges are small gorges that merge into one another at the foot of the "Lazaros mountain". The total walking time is about 6 hours. Difference in altitude 600 meters. Marking: Red marking and cairn. This is a high level hike! Mobile phone reception is available. In spring the Sarakina gorge can have a high water level, so please bring water-compatible shoes.
