Chersonissos also has a history of about 3000 years old. The place was called since the 5th century BC. BC "Chersonasos", which means headland. Remains of the settlement from the classic era can be seen. Chersonissos was an autonomous city with its own coinage and judicial system. Chersonissos is said to have been the port of the influential city "Lyttos" 1700 BC. The city was founded in 220 BC. BC destroyed by Knossos (city-states). In the Chersonissos area, the goddess "Britomartis" was worshiped, it was the goddess of the ports. Their sanctuary was on a rock on Cape "Kastri" and was also used as a navigation aid for seafarers.
The montain-village "Archanes", which lies at the foot of Mount Jouchtas, is also worth a day trip from Chersonissos. The Jouchtas mountain is 811 meters high and its foothills are the largest wine-growing region in Crete. 4 km from Archanes is "Vathipetro" it is a Minoan site. Ruins of a country house, winery, wine cellar and work rooms can be seen (1600-1550 BC)

As a beautiful sandy beach in the region of Hersonissos we recommend the beach of "Anissaras".
Inland the mountains rise immediately. It is not far to Heraklion-Knossos (30km), the Lassithi Plateau or Agios Nikolaos. The beaches are very different. Small sandy coves feature near the town (see photos above) and long beaches, with white or pale red sand, stretch as far as Kato Gouves in the west. Here and there rocks are to be found in the water but mostly the beaches are very good.
