Chersonissos has developed over the last few years into the liveliest holiday resort on Crete. This is the right place for those looking for nightlife and keenly priced all inclusive hotels. The waterfront starts at the former small fishing harbour and has rows of tavernas.
During the day Chersonissos often looks dreary but at night it comes alive. Chersonissos is 26 km east of the island's capital Heraklion and, together with the neighboring towns of Gouves, Stalis and Malia, this region merge to the largest tourist region of Crete. Chersonissos can look back on a long time experience in tourism.
Small sandy bays near the city characterize the picture. The large, long sandy beaches, sometimes bright, sometimes slightly reddish, extend to Kato Gouves to the west. Here and there are slabs of rock in the water, but most of the beach is very good.
Numerous bars, cafes, taverns and clubs surround the streets and the town of Chersonissos. A beach promenade from Gouves leads from the hotels to Chersonissos. But Chersonissos has not only a modern life.
Chersonissos also has a history of about 3000 years old. The place was called since the 5th century BC. BC "Chersonasos", which means headland. Remains of the settlement from the classic era can be seen. Chersonissos was an autonomous city with its own coinage and judicial system. Chersonissos is said to have been the port of the influential city "Lyttos" 1700 BC. The city was founded in 220 BC. BC destroyed by Knossos (city-states). In the Chersonissos area, the goddess "Britomartis" was worshiped, it was the goddess of the ports. Their sanctuary was on a rock on Cape "Kastri" and was also used as a navigation aid for seafarers.

If you have a literary streak, you should visit the museum of the writer Nikos Kazantzakis in Mirtia: www.kazantzakis-museum.gr
As a beautiful sandy beach in the region of Hersonissos we recommend the beach of "Anissaras".
Inland the mountains rise immediately. It is not far to Heraklion-Knossos (30km), the Lassithi Plateau or Agios Nikolaos. The beaches are very different. Small sandy coves feature near the town (see photos above) and long beaches, with white or pale red sand, stretch as far as Kato Gouves in the west. Here and there rocks are to be found in the water but mostly the beaches are very good.
